Ballarat

Built from the gold rush in 1851, Ballarat became a bustling town of more than 20,000 miners trying their luck at the shallow alluvial clay deposits from Ballarat Creek. The miners were charged a monthly fee by the government before they could mine and were refused the right to vote. In 1854 they held a meeting at Bakery Hill in protest to the unfair conditions and built a stockade for protection. On December 3rd 1854, 300 soldiers attacked the Eureka Stockade, killing 28 miners and wounding many others. This led to the birth of democracy in Australia. Sovereign Hill is an excellent way to see how conditions were during the goldrush days. Today Ballarat is home to 85,000 people.
