Mansfield
Mansfield is a picturesque town located in the ‘High Country’, situated at the base of Mount Buller 187km from Melbourne. Mansfield started out as a hub for the stations or ‘runs’ as they were called, the roundabout was the meeting place. In the 1860s gold was discovered in the region which brought wealth and the population grew quickly. Bushrangers saw this as an opportunity and would hide out from the police in the surrounding ranges. The well known Ned Kelly and Harry Powers were two such bushrangers who roamed the lands. Nearby is Lake Eildon, Victoria’s largest inland lake (when the lake has water), it is a popular spot for water sports.
